David Wood 1947-2022

David was born in Syracuse NY to

Judge Laurence David “LD” Wood and Esther Wynkoop Wood. David graduated from The Salisbury School in 1965,

and went on to Syracuse University.

In 1966 he joined the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam, where he received a Purple Heart. After the War,

he returned to Syracuse University and graduated with a B.A in Anthropology. In 1979 David married Shirley Todd and they

settled down in Plainfield, Ma where they have continued to reside for for 43 years. He was also a longtime Plainfield Police Officer, and Police Chief for 6 years, until his retirement from the force in 2014. David

worked for the State of Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management for many years before retiring in 2002, and thoroughly enjoyed his retirement in good health for the past 20 years. He often referred to living the “Life of Reily” because he felt so happy having a large loving family and was genuinely content with his life. Along with his wife Shirley, David leaves behind his daughter, Amelia Wood Dwyer and her husband Casey Dwyer, and his beloved granddaughter, Chloe. He also leaves behind his sister Ann Wood Metelliof Spoleto, Italy; cousins Jud and Aleka Wynkoop; numerous brothers and sisters in-law, nieces and nephews, and friends. David never wanted to grow old, and he said he hoped someday that he would just fall asleep peacefully. He did just that, at his home, in peace.

A graveside service will take place this Saturday November 5th at Hilltop Cemetery, North Central St., Plainfield at 11AM. Williamsburg Funeral Home was entrusted with David’s arrangements.
